_thinkMake Week-7:Active engagement in the space

Our class starts with a presentation on the topic of "The RSVP Cycles: Creative Processes in the Human Environment" by Lawrence Halprin. Emily and I presented it. I'll describe this presentation on a different blog.

As ususal we choose 7 different words from the reading. They are

Preconceived

Balance

Emerged

Believe

Goals

Process

Score

And then I choose 3 words out of those 7, and they are:

Preconceived

Emerged

Score

It was time to turn these three words into verbs.

To opiniate

To develop

To produce

The whole class was divided into 2 groups at this time of our class. There were four of us in our group. We are being tasked with choosing a place and analyzing the rhythm of that specific place

A delicate site drawing with blind eyes.

We chose a lift to perform this task. We entered the lift and observed it for 5 minutes, inhaling everything. And then we closed our eyes for 2 minutes and made a sketch out of it.

As it is a lift. It was going up and down, carrying people from one floor to another. Some remained silent, while others gossiped. Some people put pressure on it while entering, which causes a little shake in it. Every floor has a different story with different sounds and actions. I felt cold air; I assume it was the ground floor. There was a cafe. I could smell it because some people ride in the lift with coffee. Someone came into my life right after smoking outside, which I could smell while that person was in the lift. There was a mirror, light, and CCTV that could enter my mind while I was doing the sketch with closed eyes. Every time the door has been opened or closed, I could hear 'mind the door', 'door closing'. I have problem with motion sickness which caused me spinning head and felt bad in my stomach during the stay in the lift.

This time, we've started analyzing the rhythm. We're four of them. So we worked on different analyses.

For me, I worked on the actions on different floors, the time that has been waiting on each floor, the number of people using the lift, the number of people who're being quiet and talkative in the lift, and the different temperatures, sounds, and noises on each floor. The sound that comes from life goes off after 30 seconds when no one operates the lift.

Then we collage all four sketches of rhythm analysis together. And we felt it looked like the rhythm of music, so we decided to put that rhythm into action by using instruments. And we went downstairs and chose a piano as the instrument. Luckily, Linnea could play the piano. So what we did was, using our collage rhythm, we converted it into a piano note and played and recorded the sound as well. Before we played and recorded the sound, we made the piano note, which was like C-C-D-D-E-E-F-F-G-G-A-A. We went upstairs in our studio with the recording, and then we brought our own instrument to perform. We took five partition boards to make it look like a lift and performed with our own instrument. Me and Naaz were outside the lift that we made with our instrument. Naaz was representing the sound that comes from the elevator; I was performing the noise people were making; and Linnea was dancing quite consistently, which represents the lift going up and down. Sina was playing his music consistently, which represents the continuous in and out of people from the lift on different floors.

After the performance, we discussed it with our teacher, Mr. Oren.

We've been in the lift for 45 minutes. Either it was a good or bad decision, we don't know. After 45 minutes of being in this life, we're feeling a bit sick.
